Blackett made his international debut at U21s level earlier this year after becoming a constant part of Louis van Gaal‘s first XI over the course of the first few games of the season.
The defender started the first five Premier League games of the season and bedded in relatively well before being sent off in a calamitous performance at Leicester City as United lost 5-3.
The 20-year-old has made sporadic appearances for the first team since then and played his first game since the suspension against Arsenal last month. A constant defensive crisis has given players like Blackett the chance to impress their new boss this season.
Blackett has appeared for England at all youth levels and his early performances at Old Trafford caught the eye of U21 manager Gareth Southgate and saw Blackett make his debut in a qualifying match away at Moldova.
The centre-back, who can also play at left-back, came on as a second half substitute in the match but hasn’t been called upon since given the fact he has fallen back in the pecking order at Old Trafford.
But constant injuries to first team defenders at the club will give Blackett every chance of being in and around the match day squads for the foreseeable future.
