Manchester United’s home support are often criticised for the noise (or lack of it) inside Old Trafford but regularly the away support tops anything in the country.
There were no signs of that changing on Monday night as the hearty faithful who had travelled all the way to the south coast on a Monday night made themselves heard over the home support right from the first whistle.
They had plenty to cheer as a Robin van Persie double saw United snatch all three points despite only managing two shots on target in the whole ninety minutes and the scenes on the concourse after the match showed supporters would make the long journey home happy as ever.
The second goal would have been a moment to savour for those near the front of the away stand given van Persie’s momentum took he and his team mates almost into the fans and the importance of those who regularly make such journeys wasn’t lost on both players and staff come the full-time whistle.
Every player made their way to the fans post-match to clap and celebrate whilst van Persie and Wayne Rooney personally handed their match shirts to fans near the front. Louis van Gaal and Ryan Giggs also made their way across to thank the fans for their constant support.
