Van Persie: I can play 90 minutes easily

by Richard Laverty

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie says he is feeling good and can ‘play 90 minutes easily’ after he scored the goals that led United to their fifth straight win on Monday night.

Van Persie had come under heavy criticism in recent weeks after a series of poor performances, culminating in him touching the ball just 13 times against former club Arsenal last month.

But Van Persie looked much more like his old self against Southampton as he latched on to Jose Fonte’s poor back pass to score the first and tapped home Wayne Rooney‘s free-kick to seal the points.

The striker had even come under criticism in public from his manager but the Dutchman told MUTV after the game he’s feeling good.

“I felt good. I’ve been feeling good over the last couple of weeks, I can play 90 minutes easily,” said van Persie.

Van Persie’s potential return to some sort of top form will be timely for van Gaal and United given the hectic run of fixtures over Christmas and the game against Liverpool that attentions now turn to this Sunday.

Wayne Rooney was off colour after missing the Stoke game whilst questions still remain over the fitness of Radamel Falcao. Angel Di Maria may recover for Sunday’s match but if not van Persie will play a key role of United are to avenge last season’s 3-0 defeat.
