United take on rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford this weekend and Van Persie’s two goals against Southampton on Monday night mean he is going into the game in good form and United are looking for six wins on the bounce.
Louis van Gaal himself had even weighed in on the criticism of van Persie and appeared ready to drop the striker if it hadn’t have been for an illness picked up by James Wilson before the Hull City game in which the 31-year-old scored.
But Young has been quick to praise the striker’s return to form ahead of the crunch match against Liverpool on Sunday.
“They were brilliant finishes from Robin,” said Young. “I think the first one was obviously a gift but he still had to finish it off.
“The second was one of those poacher’s goals where he has worked on going around the back post and getting on the end of Wazza’s free-kicks.
“He managed to do that and we’re just delighted to get the three points to take us into the next game.”
With on-going concerns over the fitness of Radamel Falcao, van Persie is set to start up front once again on Sunday and a goal against arch rivals such as Liverpool will do wonders to stop the criticism once and for all.
