Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic could be set for a shock return to Old Trafford in January, according to reports in Italy.
Vidic left United in June after appearing to get fed up with life under David Moyes and announced he would leave the club for Inter Milan before the season had even ended.
Moyes was eventually sacked in April but it was too late for the then 32-year-old to reverse his decision and he made an emotional farewell to Old Trafford against Hull City in May.
The former Serbia international made his final appearance for the club against Southampton a few days later but has struggled to settle to life at the San Siro, putting in several unconvincing performances and is now being managed by former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini.
Vidic hasn’t featured as regularly under Mancini and Football Italia suggest United may have already been in contact with Inter about a return for the popular defender.
The 33-year-old is currently out of action with a bout of flu but has fallen behind Andrea Ranocchia and Juan Jesus in the pecking order at the San Siro.
Despite struggling in his final season at Old Trafford and early months in Italy, a return to Vidic would go a long way to helping the current injury crisis at United this season.
But Vidic’s form and lack of fitness with Inter will make supporters wary of a return which could tarnish the legacy of their former captain and whether or not he’ll just become another addition to the physio room inside Carrington.
