Man Utd prepared to make De Gea world’s richest goalkeeper – report

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United are ready to offer David de Gea a new contract which will make him the world’s best paid goalkeeper, according to Neil Custis from The Sun.

De Gea’s current deal, worth an estimated £60,000 a week, expires next summer and with Iker Casillas’ career coming into its twilight at Real Madrid, the Spanish side are going to come after De Gea.

With that in mind, United are prepared to reward De Gea for his brilliant form with a deal that would be richly deserved and it’s something they should do as soon as possible.

A five-year deal worth £36.4m breaks down to £140,000 a week which, when you look at it relatively, is a very small amount in comparison to the likes of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney who are on £250,000 a week.

The commercial value of attackers in comparison to goalkeepers is why they are offered such high wages but in football terms, a goalkeeper of De Gea’s ability is worth just as much as Van Persie or Rooney to Man United.

Whatever United have to do to keep De Gea at Old Trafford, they need to do it. As we’ve said previously, each generation of footballers only has a handful of goalkeepers who have the ability to become true greats. De Gea falls into that bracket and United cannot afford to let him leave.
