Manchester United were a shambles in the first 30 minutes away to Southampton on Monday. Using a 5-3-2 for the second consecutive away match after beating Arsenal 2-1 with it a few weeks beforehand, United set-up with the counter-attack in mind.
As it turned out, that was the wrong decision without somebody like Angel di Maria but could Van Gaal re-think his player choice and use it again on Sunday?
If he did, Wayne Rooney could be a candidate to drop deeper and fulfil the Di Maria role of leading the counter-attacks. Rooney loves a quick counter-attack and still has the turn of pace to be dangerous, especially when he’ll be so pumped up against Liverpool.
The added bonus of playing Rooney deeper means there is the potential for Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao to both start up front if they are both passed fit.
Up against the less than average and bereft of confidence defence which Liverpool currently have, United’s trio could have a field day.
