The pair have been missing from action for some time now and their returns will be a welcome boost to Van Gaal given Chris Smalling was ruled out for two weeks after coming off against Southampton.
Rafael’s recent absence has been curious given he was pictured training as early as the day before the Arsenal game three weeks ago and again before the Southampton match on Monday night.
Jones has been missing since the West Brom match in October but it appears both have now put their latest setbacks behind them and Rafael in particular could face Liverpool on Sunday.
Van Gaal confirmed in his Friday press conference that he only has four injuries: “Now I have only four players injured, the best so far I think.”
Sadly for van Gaal, all four of those injuries are to first team players including key man Angel Di Maria. With Smalling also on the list, the return of both Jones and Rafael will be most welcome but it is unlikely either will be risked unless they are fully fit given the hectic schedule over Christmas.
