Van Gaal: I want to make Old Trafford a fortress

by Richard Laverty

Louis van Gaal knows Manchester United have to make Old Trafford a fortress once again and will hope to continue the return of their best home form against Liverpool.

United started the season at home to Swansea with a loss and it appeared the same cracks that appeared at home under David Moyes were continuing.

The club had the best away form in the Premier League last season but saw teams such as West Brom, Newcastle, Everton and bitter rivals Manchester City and Liverpool come to Old Trafford and walk away with three points.

Teams no longer feared coming to visit United whereas several years United would simply brush aside most sides under Sir Alex Ferguson‘s guidance.

But since the defeat to Swansea at the start of August, United have dropped just two points at home this season and that was to leaders Chelsea.

In recent weeks United beat Crystal Palace and Hull to nil before following that up with another victory against Stoke after beating Everton and West Ham in quick succession in September.

With Liverpool next on the fixture list and coming to Old Trafford in drastically different form to last season, United will hope to continue their good run and solidify their position in the top four.
