Man Utd set to beat Chelsea and Liverpool to Kevin Mendez – report

by Richard Laverty

Manchester United could be set to sign young Uruguayan striker Kevin Mendez in the January transfer window according to reports in Italy.

The Daily Star picked up on the report and add that Louis van Gaal is a fan of the Penarol man who has been rather unsurprisingly dubbed the next ‘Luis Suarez’.

Given Mendez’s upbringing in Uruguay it could be a lazy comparison but the 18-year-old scored two goals in the U17 World Cup last year and recently made Goal.com’s ’50 best under-18 footballers in the world’ list.

Despite constant suggestions from both van Gaal and Ed Woodward that United wouldn’t buy in January, the situation will probably be more lenient if the club have a chance to bring a talented youngster to the club for a small fee.

Van Gaal’s chase may also be affected by the fact Liverpool and Chelsea are reported to be watching the striker but United’s good relationship with Penarol could give them a helping hand in the saga.

United brought defender Guillermo Varela to the club shortly after Sir Alex Ferguson retired 18 months ago and Mendez may be persuaded to make the same move should van Gaal act on his interest in the upcoming January transfer window.
