Van Persie scored the final goal of the game but it may not have been as comfortable had it not been for De Gea.
The goalkeeper made several saves from Raheem Sterling in the first half and somehow thwarted the winger despite him latching on to the end of a Jonny Evans back-pass.
De Gea then turned on Mario Balotelli, tipping his close range effort on to the crossbar and van Persie said the goalkeeper was ‘outstanding’ after the match.
David [De Gea] was outstanding,” van Persie told Sky Sports.
“He was brilliant – it’s not often a team wins 3-0 and the goalkeeper is man of the match.”
Van Persie also had praise for the United support who made themselves heard throughout the victory. Fans sung to the final whistle during last season’s reverse scoreline against Liverpool and the striker was thankful for the continuous support from within Old Trafford.
“The fans were brilliant today. Again, they were our 12th man.”
Van Persie will be hoping to continue his own good form of late as United now prepare for the busy Christmas and new year period of the season.
