Player Ratings: Man Utd – Liverpool – De Gea shines once again

by Richard Laverty

David De Gea 10 The United no.1 was once again outstanding, he made save after save including tipping a Balotelli shot on to the bar. Perfection.

Phil Jones 7 Jones looked sluggish early on in his return and picked up a needless booking early on. Settled down though and did well for his first game back, made one very good tackle on Sterling.

Michael Carrick 7 Playing at the back again, Carrick’s ability on the ball was calming on another day where the team struggled with ball retention. His experienced once more invaluable.

Jonny Evans 6 Looked more settled than last week and looked like he needed the 90 minutes. Nothing spectacular but a welcome return to action.

Antonio Valencia 8 Possibly Valencia’s best game at wing-back. Did brilliantly to set up the first goal and was an attacking threat all day. Looked like the old Valencia.

Marouane Fellaini 6 If only you could give two ratings. It looked bad for Fellaini at half-time, he was sloppy in possession and was booked early on. However, the Belgian was superb in the second half, regularly breaking up play.

Juan Mata 7 The Spaniard was once again on the outskirts of things but ended up with a goal and an assist. Way offside for his close range header but showed great vision to pick out van Persie for the third when others would have shot.

Wayne Rooney 8 The captain was excellent in his midfield role today. Playing deeper, his first touch was much improved and he rarely lost possession. Scored with a great finish to get United on their merry way.

Ashley Young 6 Another solid performance from the makeshift left-back. Put in the cross that led to the second goal and defended well. An important member of the squad right now.

James Wilson 5 The young striker struggled to impose himself as United couldn’t get hold of the ball early on. A few runs stretched Liverpool’s defence but there’ll be more to come from the 19-year-old.

Robin van Persie 7 Another strong showing from the Dutchman. He looked energised and confident and was winning the ball back from the opposition. Strong in his hold up play and got a well deserved goal.

Ander Herrera 6 They may have been cruising but United’s attack linked up better when Herrera was brought on. His touch, passing and movement helped open up Liverpool late on.

Radamel Falcao 5 Another cameo but Falcao didn’t have much of a chance to impress. Was involved with good link-up play and his movement was excellent.

Patrick McNair N/A The young defender was brought on late on and would have welcomed a return given what happened at Southampton.
