Not for the first time this season, Louis van Gaal chose a 5-3-2 formation for Manchester United at the weekend.
With Michael Carrick forming part of the defence, United looked a lot more assured in the formation than they did away at Southampton less than a week before and Van Gaal may decide to stick with it once more for the upcoming trip to Aston Villa.
One player who could really boost the formation is a returning Angel di Maria. The Argentinian is so deadly on the counter-attack in much the same fashion as Arjen Robben was for Louis van Gaal‘s Holland at the World Cup and without him, the 5-3-2 doesn’t carry the same threat on the counter.
Van Gaal hasn’t rushed Di Maria back into action and with United continuing their winning ways in his absence, it has been a vindicated decision but the United boss will certainly want Di Maria back as quickly as possible because of how influential he is to the team.
