Daley Blind has given a positive update on his injury and revealed he is on schedule to return in a few weeks for Manchester United.
The Dutch midfielder has been missing since damaging his knee ligaments away on international duty with Holland but is expected to return to action at the start of 2015.
Since his injury, Michael Carrick has stepped into his role in midfield and done extremely well, so Van Gaal will be faced with a tough decision when both players are fully fit.
“Things are on schedule, the injury is getting better in small steps. But it will take a couple more weeks,” Blind told De Telegraaf.
Blind could be back in time for United’s home game against Southampton on 11 January but Van Gaal won’t rush him back into action, especially if Carrick’s current form continues.
What Van Gaal has shown with Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao is that he isn’t willing to risk players coming back too soon from injury in case they aggravate a problem, so Blind will only be available when he is 100% fit.
