Man Utd scouts attend Benfica match

by Richard Laverty

Manchester United scouts attended the Portuguese Cup match between Benfica and Braga on Thursday night, as confirmed by the official attendee list at the Estadio de Luz.

Who United were scouting is up for debate but it is rumoured the club were keeping an eye on Argentinian duo Enzo Perez and Nico Gaitain.

Both players have been on United’s radar for several years although reports suggest the pair may be heading for La Liga side Valencia.

Gaitan has been in good form for the Portuguese side in the last 18 months whilst Perez has emerged as one of the brightest central midfielders in Europe.

Acting as deputy to current United star Angel Di Maria in the World Cup, Perez was chosen to start the final against Germany in Di Maria’s absence.

Gaitan hasn’t had the impact his team-mate has with the national side but given the range of attacking options available to Argentina it’s not a huge surprise that the attacker isn’t a regular in the international set up.

It’s difficult to pinpoint any other potential targets United could have been watching. Centre-back Ezequiel Garay was always at the centre of attention if United scouts were seen in Portugal but the defender has since moved to Zenit in Russia.
