Carrick has certainly shown his worth to the side of late. United have won six games in a row since Carrick returned to the side in the home game against Crystal Palace in November.
The 33-year-old struggled for form and like many suffered under David Moyes last season but a season before that Carrick was one of the catalysts behind United’s last league title along with Robin van Persie.
Ferguson brought Carrick to the club in 2006 and went on to win three league titles in a row as well as Champions League and certainly believes the midfielder is vital to the club.
“I think Michael Carrick is the best central midfield player in English football, I really do,” Ferguson told BT Sport in an exclusive interview.
“I think he is the best English player in the game.”
It’s certainly high praise for a player who appears to go underrated by both United supporters and football fans in general but you can’t ignore praise when it comes from one of the greatest managers the game has ever seen.
Carrick will hope to return to his influential role in the midfield on Boxing Day when Newcastle United visit Old Trafford.
