Van Gaal happy to continue using Rooney in midfield

Louis van Gaal is prepared to keep playing Wayne Rooney in midfield and doesn’t feel obliged to play him up front for Manchester United.

Under Van Gaal, Rooney has been used in a variety of positions but thanks to injuries he has recently found himself in a midfield role and as his performance against Liverpool showed, he’s capable of putting in great shifts in that role.

Rooney’s ability to play in more than one position is something that pleases Van Gaal and although some of his best performances have come when up front this season, the United boss is happy for Rooney to continue as a midfielder.

“Wayne is a player who can play in different positions and I like that because I like multi functional players,” Van Gaal said.

“That’s why I can use him as a midfielder, also as a striker and an attacking midfielder. The last game he was more a defensive midfielder.

“I like that he is also coming into the penalty area because he can score goals. He has the ability to run from box to box but I like him closer to the opponents penalty area than our goal.

With Robin van Persie back in form and Radamel Falcao back among the goals, Van Gaal’s preference to play Rooney in midfield is a testament to how much quality there is in United’s squad.

That being said, it will be interesting to see what role Rooney has under Van Gaal when Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera and Daley Blind are all available for selection.
