Louis van Gaal wants Manchester United to dominate games to avoid any unnecessary points being dropped over the Christmas period.
Particularly away from home, United have struggled to get a hold of games and their first two away wins of the season came against Arsenal and Southampton.
But in both United were sloppy and once again struggled to impose themselves against a 10-men Aston Villa at the weekend. At home, the team have dropped just two points since losing to Swansea on the opening day and van Gaal wants to see his players dominate.
“My record on away matches in general is not to so bad, we have to build a style of play to dominate for 90 mins,” said Van Gaal during his pre-match press conference.
The side’s best performance of the season came last month at home to Hull City. Despite the Tigers being lacklustre and offering no attacking threat, United dominated from the off and won 3-0, a rare convincing scoreline this season.
“That was a good match,” Van Gaal added, regarding the Hull game.
The 3-0 win against Liverpool appeared convincing on paper but United were kept in the game largely thanks to their goalkeeper, David De Gea.
Whilst their home form continues to be a strong point of the season, United have three away games in a week after the Newcastle match and will need to put down a marker against Stoke and Spurs in order to consolidate their third place in the league.
