Wayne Rooney put in a world class performance as Manchester United swept aside Newcastle on Friday afternoon.
A Boxing Day rematch of two years ago so a far more one-sided game and Rooney was at the heart of it, scoring two goals before providing the assist for Robin van Persie‘s third.
Despite playing in midfield, Rooney was able to run unmarked twice into the box to score but also carried out his crucial defensive work.
In the second half he provided a beautiful lofted pass for van Persie to head home, rounding off a brilliant performance from the captain.
He will always have his critics among certain United supporters but they were united in praise for the no.10 today.
Rooney speaks very well to the media these days. Has definitely matured being skipper. Playing very well and leading by example.

Sensational pass, sensational goal. The Rooney-haters must be struggling lately.

Since his suspension which saw him miss the whole of October, Rooney has been in top form, scoring against Hull City before opening the scoring against Liverpool and grabbing his brace in the first half today.
Rooney returns to a ground where he scored a brace last season on Sunday and supporters will hope he can repeat the feat this year as United play Tottenham Hotspur.
