Louis van Gaal feels Angel di Maria doesn’t have a set position at Manchester United and doesn’t think he has been helped by constant injury problems in the squad.
The Argentinian midfielder has been used as a winger on both flanks as well as an attacking midfielder and a deeper lying central midfielder already.
He has flourished in a variety of positions which is a testament to his ability but Van Gaal will want to get Di Maria settled into a regular position.
“We still have to find that out, ” Van Gaal told ManUtd.com when asked about his best role.
“It is also [about] the composition of the team, we have to look for the best team also because all of the players were injured so I could not select the team that I want.”
Out on the wing, his blistering pace leaves most full-backs in the Premier League with no chance of catching him and his final delivery is sublime. Centrally, his dribbling ability comes to the fore and his vision can help split defences open. Wherever Di Maria plays for United, he is an asset.
Van Gaal has admitted he prefers multi-functional players which certainly goes some way to explaining why he was happy to pay a club record £59.7m for Di Maria but it will be interesting to see what role he sees the Argentinian having at United in the long-term when injuries aren’t dictating his position in the team.
Do you think Di Maria should be played more as a winger or a central midfield for Man United?
