Sir Alex Ferguson was all smiles in the Old Trafford crowd after watching Manchester United ease to a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United.
It would have been a clean 3-0 win if not for a clumsy tackle from Phil Jones which gave away a penalty but it didn’t take anything away from the overall performance of the 90 minutes.
For Fergie, seeing United exert so much control in a game is obviously something that gets him smiling.
On more than one occasion this season, United have won games when not at their best. Although there were shaky times against Newcastle, there wasn’t a time where United didn’t look in control which is something that will please Louis van Gaal immensely.
Fergie’s teams were great at playing above themselves and win even when they were playing poorly(you don’t get United fans singing “We’re shit and we’re top of the league” for no reason). It’s a characteristic Van Gaal’s side has picked up as well and that’s helped put United into a great position going into the second half of the season.
