Van Gaal confirms Januzaj has virus

by Richard Laverty

Adnan Januzaj was absent against Newcastle United on Boxing Day due to a virus, the same one picked up by Marouane Fellaini last week.

The young Belgian has rarely featured this season but it seemed strange not to see his name at least on the bench against Newcastle.

But Louis van Gaal explained after the match that Januzaj was ill and that a virus had been spreading around a couple of members of the squad.

There have been rumours that Januzaj could go out on loan next month given his lack of game time but van Gaal denied that earlier this week. But he could confirm the winger was ill on Boxing Day.

“Januzaj is ill. It is a virus that is now running in the air. The virus has approached a lot of players but for him, it was too much,” said Van Gaal.

With Fellaini also ill, it appears to be a virus that has latched itself particularly on to the Belgian section of the squad.

Given the lack of wingers needed in the team right now though and Januzaj’s lack of game time in general, his absence isn’t being felt as hard as his international colleague, something which wouldn’t have been expected this time last season.
