Player Ratings: Stoke 1-1 Man Utd – Falcao the only man to shine

by Richard Laverty

David de Gea 7 Not a lot he could do about the goal, didn’t have much to do beyond that except catch a few balls into the box.

Phil Jones 5 The silly decisions that Jones regularly makes returned today, the defender continued to concede soft free-kicks throughout the 90 minutes to the frustration of supporters.

Chris Smalling 6 The brightest of the back three, although that’s not such high praise on this occasion. Made a few good clearances and tackles but the trio need to start clicking as a unit.

Jonny Evans 3 Beyond bad. Nobody quite knew what he was doing (including himself) as he left Diouf in on goal. Clearly lacking confidence but needs to show his experience.

Ashley Young 4 Ineffective on the right compared to recent good form on the left hand side. Couldn’t get into the game, ended his afternoon will a pulled hamstring.

Michael Carrick 5 Some neat passes but failed to influence the game as he has recently. Stoke gave him no time on the ball, will have better games.

Wayne Rooney 5 A poor showing from the captain. Like Carrick, couldn’t get on the ball. Can’t knock him for trying to find team mates but nothing worked for him today.

Luke Shaw 5 Good to see Shaw back in the team but couldn’t do much going forward. Used to the overlap, Shaw doesn’t have that luxury in the current system, defended well.

Juan Mata 4 As with his midfield team mates, just didn’t get any time on the ball. It was an away performance United fans are used to but a disappointment after shining against Spurs.

Robin van Persie 5 Like so many of his team mates, also couldn’t get into the match. Hold up play was strong and one moment of magic almost ended in a goal, surprising he wasn’t subbed instead of Falcao.

Radamel Falcao 7 Good performance from the striker. Got a poacher’s goal and worked hard, tested the defence, looked disappointed and bemused to be subbed.

Substitutes

Adnan Januzaj 5 End product wasn’t there but can’t knock him for trying. Looked willing to beat a man and try something different playing in an unfamiliar role

Ander Herrera 5 Didn’t have any more luck than his team mates. A few neat touches on the ball but couldn’t influence the match.

Rafael N/A Wasn’t on for long but didn’t do much to impress. Lacked composure when he got forward but can expect to feature now with Young out.
