Manchester United’s Under-19s lost their opening Group B game to Grasshopper Club Zurich by 3-2 at the Mercedes Benz Junior Cup.
11 of the 12 man squad which travelled to the tournament in Sindelfingen, Germany, were on the pitch for the game. Joel Castro Pereira, who is captaining the squad, was the only player to remain on the pitch for the duration of the match.
United got off to a better start than they have in the past two years, with the youngsters adapting well to the six-a-side indoor style, which requires ball possession and an attacking focus.
Timothy Fosu-Mensah opened the scoring for United with a nicely curled effort into the far left hand corner of the goal. Good defending from Tyler Reid prevented what looked like a certain goal and Joel Pereira recovered well to block after he had held onto the ball too long.
Ro-Shaun Williams doubled United’s lead in the second half with a fantastic strike from the right flank. However United sat back and invited pressure onto themselves and soon the Swiss side had equalised. Devonte Redmond had an effort which went over the bar and later hit the woodwork. Unfortunately there was enough time for Grasshopper Club Zurich to attack and seal a 3 – 2 win.
That defeat left United 3rd in Group B after the opening matches.
