Mercedes Benz Junior Cup: Schalke 0-2 Manchester United

by Tracey Germaine

Manchester United defeated Schalke 2-0 in the last Group B game in the first stage of the Mercedes Benz Junior Cup. It was an impressive victory as Schalke had won both of their opening two games.

Joel Pereira was back in goal for the final group match. Timothy Fosu-Mensah had an early shot from range but his effort went high and wide. The first half ended goalless.

However a draw would not have been a great result for our hopes in the competition and animated team talk from Paul McGuinness at half time boosted the U19s.

Oliver Rathbone cleverly played the ball off the hoarding into the path of Joe Riley, who was able to slot the ball home and give United the lead.

Then Marcus Rashford went on fantastic run, beat the Schalke defender and smashed the ball into the top corner.

That victory saw United take first place in Group B, ahead of Schalke 04 on goal difference. The U19s will face the third placed team of Group A  later this afternoon in Group 2 of the second stage of tournament – which will either be Fenerbahce or TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
