Manchester United are through to the semi-finals of the Mercedes Benz Junior Cup following a 3-1 victory over TSG Hoffenheim which saw them top Group Two in the second group stage of the tournament.
It was a bright display from the U19s who appeared to have learned from the opening day’s matches and gave their best performance of the competition so far.
As with day one, the goalkeeper was a fixture for the entire game while the 11 outfield members of the squad played their part in the game. Following Fenerbahce’s earlier defeat to VfB Stuttgart, the winner of United’s match would top the group.
Joe Riley had a bright start to the game, and attempted to curl a shot into the top corner of the goal, but unfortunately he didn’t get sufficient curve on the strike and it went wide. Fosu-Mensah went close after displaying silky skills to turn and shoot but dragged the shot wide. Riley had a final opportunity to score but time was not on his side as the half-time klaxon rang out.
Fosu-Mensah doubled the lead in the second half, after Rashford pulled the ball back in the box. Joel Pereira was then on hand to make a double save but couldn’t prevent Hoffenheim from scoring. Then, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson sealed the victory with a neat finish from a difficult angle.
That win sets up a semi-final tie with Grasshopper Club Zurich who United played in their first game of the tournament, losing 3-2, following a late goal from the Swiss side.
