Manchester United may renew their interest in Argentinian centre-back Nicolas Otamendi this month according to reports in Spain.
United were first linked with Otamendi back in January 2014 when reports from Portugal suggested a €15m bid had been made but the move never materialised and Otamendi joined Valencia a week later.
After spending the rest of last season in Brazil when he was loaned out immediately to Atletico Mineiro, the defender has been in rejuvenated form with a rejuvenated Valencia so far this season.
SuperDeporte is reporting Otamendi could become a United player in January if Louis van Gaal pays the release clause and agrees to terms with the player. United have been long interested in the Argentinian centre-half and the player will only be allowed to leave if the €50 million release clause is met.
It seems unlikely United will fork out the fee requested for a centre-back that doesn’t fall into the world class category, with Mats Hummels and Aymeric Laporte much more likely should the club go down the more expensive route.
Ezequiel Garay and Fabian Schar could be picked up for a good fee given their quality whilst the club are also thought to be watching Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar, whose contract expires in the summer.
Otamendi scored the winning goal for Valencia on Sunday night to end Real Madrid’s 22-match winning streak.
