AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman has refused to discuss rumours linking him with a January move to Manchester United, saying it would be ‘disrespectful’ to discuss the move.
Rumours surfaced earlier this week that United were stepping up their chase for the Dutch international now the January window has opened but Strootman is determined to respect his contract.
“I want to play more, and return to my best level,” Strootman told Sky.
“I’ve signed up for five years, but so far I’ve only been playing for six or seven months. I want to play and help the team. That’s important to me.
“If I spoke about other clubs that would be disrespectful, and I don’t want to do that.”
Strootman missed the majority of 2014 and forced van Gaal to change his entire system with Holland at the World Cup but the midfielder is now just focused on returning to fitness and not on a move to United.
“I worked for eight months to come back. I played against Sassuolo and I wasn’t good, then I came on against [CSKA] Moscow and wasn’t right.
“After the winter break I’ve been training with more confidence, I feel better physically and I’m returning to 100 per cent.
“I’m not there yet, but I’m coming back.”
