Fox Sports Latin America presenter Christian Martin has said Manchester United have formally submitted a £35m bid for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels.
It follows on from Martin’s original claim back in November that United were preparing a record bid for Hummels and comes a day after Hummels’ father and agent, Hermann Hummels, told Sky Sports his son will not be moving in the January transfer window which is of course in direct contrast to Martin’s claims.
There may well be something in Martin’s report about a United bid for Hummels as last night the Mirror’s David McDonnell reported the club were preparing a huge bid for the German World Cup winner.
His father and agent suggest otherwise but despite the reports being rubbished by his representation, rumours have continued to gather pace. Has there been an indication from Hummels’ camp that a deal can be done?
Hummels appears less happy in Germany than he did when he returned from Brazil a World Cup winner but nobody, including the centre-back, would have expected Dortmund to be languishing in a relegation scrap come the New Year.
United have again and again shown their willingness to spend big money in the last 12 months and meeting Dortmund’s asking price shouldn’t be a problem.
If the move doesn’t happen this month and Dortmund’s poor form continues, United may bank on the fact they can pick up Hummels for a cheaper fee in the summer window.
