Smalling has nothing but praise for young United striker

Chris Smalling has been speaking about the merits of Manchester United’s latest young star James Wilson this week.

Wilson has made several appearances under Louis van Gaal and was entrusted to start against rivals Liverpool in December, despite only making one start previously under his new manager.

The 19-year-old had previously been given his club debut under Ryan Giggs at the end of last season, scoring two goals in a perfect start to his career in front of the Old Trafford crowd against Hull.

Despite not scoring this season, Wilson has shown glimpses of his talent and defender Smalling has nothing but praise for the striker.

“He’s such a threat in terms of he’s always looking to run in behind,” said Smalling.

“He’s very quick and his finishing, while I wouldn’t say it’s surprised me, it’s just the consistency and how hard he strikes the ball and how well too. He’s been very good for a lot of this season in training and I think it’s only a matter of time before we really see him make a big impact.”

Wilson has taken a back seat role over Christmas with Radamel Falcao starting all five games and with Wayne Rooney ready to return to a forward position, Wilson might have to wait a while for regular game time again.
