Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Basel centre-back Fabian Schar according to recent reports.
Journalist Steve Bates, a regular mouthpiece of United news at times this season, first reported the story back in November whilst ESPN writer Miguel Delaney also name-dropped the Swiss international this week.
Delaney mentioned Schar alongside the likes of Mats Hummels, Atletico defender Diego Godin and Real Madrid’s highly-rated defender Raphael Varane.
With United seemingly determined to land at least one defender this month, Schar would be a much better ‘value for money’ signing given his club, reputation and the fact his contract expires in the summer.
All those things put together meant Louis van Gaal could possibly pick up the 23-year-old for under £10m, a fine fee for such a talented defender given today’s market.
With any deal for Ron Vlaar now seemingly dead in the water given the Aston Villa man’s injury problems so if United are looking for a budget defender in January, the Basel centre-back could be the man.
It also appears as though United have been given an indication that a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s World Cup winner Mats Hummels could happen this month given the Bundesliga’s clubs struggles but either way it’s sure to be an intriguing few weeks at Old Trafford.
