Mixed reports in the last few months have suggested United have consistently been relaxed about their no.1’s situation at Old Trafford whilst others have believed it meant the 24-year-old was edging closer to joining Real Madrid.
A string of superb individual performances this season have thrust de Gea’s contract situation at Old Trafford into the spotlight and the Spain international now has less than 18 months left on his contract.
But van Gaal put supporters’ minds at rest on Friday night when he suggested there was ‘no problem’ with de Gea signing a new contract at the club.
“I think there is no problem for (De Gea) to sign,” he said.
“When you are a (regular) player, then probably you are the best, and then the manager is very happy that a player that is fixed in the line-up will stay.”
Despite the arrival of Victor Valdes this week, there is no doubt de Gea certainly classes as one of those ‘fixed’ players van Gaal is talking about and supporters will be pleased to know the contract situation isn’t thought of as an issue within Old Trafford.
