Sir Alex watches Southampton defeat from Old Trafford stands

by Richard Laverty

Sir Alex Ferguson looked less than impressed at Old Trafford as Manchester United fell to their first home defeat since August against Southampton.

In the 18 months United have experienced without Ferguson’s leadership, it has become somewhat of a tradition for the cameras of the world to linger on the former manager when things aren’t going well.

Ferguson was pictured looking shell-shocked last season as United were dominated by Liverpool and the exchange between himself and Sir Bobby Charlton after the League Cup defeat to Sunderland told a thousand tales.

Yesterday was another of those days as Ferguson looked on forlornly as Southampton came to Old Trafford and took away all three points with their only shot on target.

What was worse is that it was one more shot on target than United managed. Despite Juan Mata missing three good chances, two of them sitters, the stats will forever say the home side didn’t manage a single shot on target.

Indeed, the last time that happened was under Ferguson’s guidance, albeit in different and understandable circumstances. Arsenal were the visitors in May 2009 and United needed just a point to win the league, hence a defensive and nervy performance where they never troubled Arsenal’s goal.

It’s fair to say Ferguson wouldn’t have been impressed with yesterday’s performance and less impressed with the current system employed by Louis van Gaal, however forced it may be given United’s poor defensive options.
