Robin van Persie has confirmed he will not attend tonight’s FIFA Ballon d’Or gala after advice from Manchester United’s medical staff.

The Dutch striker was substituted against Southampton yesterday and walked straight off down the tunnel with what looked like a suspected ankle injury.

Louis van Gaal revealed Van Persie was set to undergo an ankle scan to assess the damage and despite being nominated for the Puskas Award at tonight’s FIFA Ballon d’Or event, Van Persie is unable to attend.

Van Persie is nominated for the Puskas ‘Goal of the Year’ Award for his flying header in the World Cup against Spain which was one of the most iconic moments of the tournament and if he wins the award, fellow countryman Ruud Gullit will accept the award on his behalf.

For United, the major concern is whether Van Persie has indeed suffered an ankle injury but with Radamel Falcao and James Wilson both fit, there is cover should he have to miss the QPR game.
