Calderon: Real Madrid don’t need De Gea

by Richard Laverty

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon believes Real Madrid do not need to make a move for Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.

United’s ‘keeper has been extensively linked with a move back to Madrid pretty much since he arrived at Old Trafford in 2011 and United supporters would be loathed to see him leave given his importance to the team.

But despite this, Calderon believes Real Madrid already have the ‘best goalkeeper in the world’ and also believes World Cup star Keylor Navas is an able deputy Iker Casillas.

“We already have the best goalkeeper in the world, which is Casillas,” Calderon told talkSPORT.

“We also have just bought Keylor Navas. I don’t see any need to get any other goalkeeper.

“De Gea is perhaps also one of the top five goalkeepers in the world but Casillas can still be at the top for three or four years. I don’t see any need [for De Gea].”

Despite the rumours, De Gea has constantly said he is happy in Manchester and the club itself appears relaxed over De Gea’s future, Louis van Gaal went as far as saying he didn’t expect any issues with a new contract for the club no.1.

De Gea’s recent performances have shot him straight into the limelight and his importance to United is no less understated despite the signing of Victor Valdes.

His peers have had no issues praising the goalkeeper throughout the season and it appears most people close to the club believe De Gea’s new contract is now a priority.
