QPR vs Man Utd: Potential 4-4-2 diamond – Fellaini back, Rooney and Di Maria switch positions

by Sam Peoples

With Robin van Persie set for a scan on his ankle, we take a look at a 4-4-2 diamond formation without the Dutchman and it’s a strong one.

With Radamel Falcao up front alongside Wayne Rooney, who has been pushed back to where his best goalscoring form came this season for both England and United, United are more than able to cope with Van Persie’s absence.

Rooney moving back to his natural position also gives Angel di Maria the freedom to move back into the left central-midfield position he has been so dangerous from this season. Quite why Louis van Gaal played them the opposite way around against Southampton is still baffling.

Juan Mata couldn’t hit a barn door at the weekend but he was creating chances and that’s the main thing, so he should pose a real threat in the no.10 spot.

There’s also a return to the starting XI for Marouane Fellaini as he adds more defensive balance in front of Daley Blind, which allows for Di Maria to operate in a more free roaming role.
