Like or lump it – Louis van Gaal has grown a particular affection to the 3-5-2 formation in recent weeks.
Manchester United fans aren’t happy about it given how poor recent performances have been but for reasons unbeknownst to us mere fans, Van Gaal is sticking with it.
With that in mind, we’ve taken a look at a 3-5-2 formation with a starting XI who could actually set-up quite nicely in it.
Placing Daley Blind at the heart of defence means he can bring the ball out through the middle. It would invite United to play out from the back instead of lumping it up the pitch and having Angel di Maria and Ander Herrera in front of Michael Carrick gives United two willing runners who are excellent with space.
Having Wayne Rooney up front is crucial. His top form has come in that position and with Robin van Persie potentially injured and Radamel Falcao still trying to find his feet, Rooney is United’s best bet for a goal.
It’s not ideal but if United are going to have to stick to the 3-5-2 formation, Van Gaal at least needs to put out a decent starting XI.
