Manchester United will always hold a special place in Cristiano Ronaldo’s heart and speaking after winning the 2014 FIFA Ballon d’Or, the Portuguese midfielder admitted he still thought about the club and missed Sir Alex Ferguson.
“The beginning of my career was there [Manchester United], that’s where I started.
“It’s for the fans of Manchester who are there supporting me all the time. I haven’t had a message from Sir Alex yet but I speak with him often.
“He told me to keep improving all the time. He said: “Cristiano, you’re the best, don’t worry about the rest. He’s fantastic. I miss him.”
Ronaldo deservedly won his second successive Ballon d’Or to bring his overall total to three including the one he earned at United back in 2008. It leaves him just one behind Lionel Messi (four) in the overall rankings.
The feeling is mutual for fans with Ronaldo. When he arrived as a greasy haired 18-year-old, Ronaldo’s talents were immediately obvious but behind the scenes, his relentless work ethic helped mould him into the superstar he is today, thanks also in no small part to the guidance of Sir Alex.
He might not be playing in a United shirt but it’s still great to see Ronaldo at the top of his game and if he ever fancied coming back to Old Trafford, he’d be welcomed with open arms.
