Van Gaal impressed by Man Utd’s U18s

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was left ‘impressed’ by what he saw when he watched the United U18 side take on Hull City this week at Old Trafford.

United ran out 3-0 winners, repeating what the first team managed back in November, and looked impressive throughout as they thrived on the wide Old Trafford pitch.

The U18s side has changed dramatically in the last four years. Gone are the names such as Ravel Morrison and Paul Pogba but Van Gaal clearly sees potential there despite a lack of stand-out names.

The manager has given a senior debut to several academy products this season including Tyler Blackett and Patrick McNair, who have particularly impressed, and Van Gaal was happy to see United’s youngsters doing so well.

“I was impressed with the team play but also with the individual players I like a lot,” he said.

The likes of Andreas Pereira, Tom Thorpe and Saidy Janko have also been handed first team debuts this season under van Gaal and Dutch defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah certainly caught the eye of supporters.

The 17-year-old certainly has a similar build and stature to Paul Pogba and it would be no surprise if Fosu-Mensah was one of the ‘individuals’ Van Gaal was praising.
