Here is today’s Manchester United transfer news and gossip roundup.
Louis van Gaal does not expect a busy January transfer window, as outlined in his press conference ahead of United’s visit to QPR. The key reason cited by the Dutchman was the desire only to sign players who would improve the squad, which indicates the right players are not available in January. Naturally, United will still be linked with a host of players from around the world and there is every chance that this is typical gamesmanship from Van Gaal. It will be an interesting couple of weeks as the window draws to a close.
Adnan Januzaj should go on loan in order to benefit his career according to Andy Mitten. Januzaj has struggled to force his way in to Van Gaal’s first team plans this season and has look subdued in his limited game time. The young Belgian would certainly benefit from the chance to get regular game time and experience at loan. Given Januzaj’s limited minutes and United’s injury situation improving, it is very possible that he may finish the season on loan elsewhere. Januzaj and United could gain a lot from this move.
Rio Ferdinand has picked out Diego Godin as a player United should target as the former United centre-back tweeted his appreciation for the Atletico Madrid star during the Madrid derby. However, any move for Godin may be considered unlikely in January as Atletico remain in the Champions League, continue to challenge in the Primera Division and have just knocked Real Madrid out of the Copa del Rey.
United have £150 million to spend on transfers say The Mirror. A meeting between Ed Woodward and Van Gaal will pave the way for United to open the cheque book and continue their spending as the club rebuild. Van Gaal has identified key targets including Mats Hummels, Kevin Strootman and Nathaniel Clyne. The bulk of United’s business is likely to take place in the summer. However, The Mirror suggest Van Gaal could look to secure one major signing in January in a bid to secure United’s place in the top four.
Tyler Blackett, Paddy McNair and Andreas Pereira are yet to sign contract extensions with United, despite the trio’s contracts expiring in the summer of this year. McNair and Blackett have impressively forced their way in to United’s starting XI at various stages since Louis Van Gaal‘s arrival, whilst Pereira has also made his way in to first team proceedings. All three players have shown great promise since Van Gaal’s arrival, however, none have extended their contracts at this stage. Given their promise, it is likely the three players will be given the opportunity to extend their stay at the club and hopefully their extensions are a formality.
