Axel Witsel has opened up the possibility of a move to Manchester United by admitting he has always liked the club.
Witsel, 26, currently plays for Zenit St. Petersburg having completed a move to the Russian side in 2012 for £34m but in an interview with Bleacher Report, he discusses his desires to move to one of Europe’s top leagues and names Man United as the club he has always followed.
“I want to play in one of the top clubs in Europe one day,” he said.
“It’s true that I like the Premier League, because it is one of the best league’s in the world, for me, together with Germany and Spain. It is a very good league, it is a crazy league. A lot of my colleagues play there, but we will see. I am still young, only 26.
“We ‘ll see in the future. I have always liked Manchester United from when I was young.
“I played with Fellaini at Standard Liege, so I know him well.”Axel Witsel
United were linked with a move for Witsel back in 2012 and although he has since gone on to have a turbulent domestic career with Benfica and Zenit, he is an important player for a Belgium side bursting at the seams with talent.
Will Man United make a move for Benfica three years after they were initially linked or is he not the midfielder Louis van Gaal wants to bring in to strengthen his side?
