Unbeaten Bebe welcomes Real Madrid

by Nicolas Berg

Former Manchester United attacker Tiago Bebé failed to impress at the Portuguese greats Benfica, but is looking to re-ignite his career (again) at La Liga outfit Cordoba.

This weekend he’s likely to start against the Spanish giants Real Madrid.

In 2013/14, Bebé enjoyed a successful spell at Pacos Ferreira whilst being on loan from United. After Christmas, he bagged 11 goals including braces against Arouca (3-1 win) and Acad Coimbra (2-4 loss). That made him the most prolific Portuguese in their domestic league from January to May 2014 which was quite an achievement for a player who seemingly couldn’t hit a barn door at United.

In the summer, the 24-year-old was transferred permanently to United’s 1968 European Cup final opponents Benfica, for £2M plus a 50% sell-on clause, but struggled to settle properly. Only four games (three in the Champions League) and half a year later, he is being loaned out to 14th-placed Córdoba in La Liga.

Bebé, who featured frequently for United’s U21s whilst being at Old Trafford, has played the entire 90 minutes in both of Cordoba’s games since his arrival.

It hasn’t turned out too bad for Cordoba either with four points coming from a 1-0 win away against mid-table side Rayo Vallecano and a 1-1 draw at home against the surprise of the La Liga season, 8th-placed Eibar. That being said, Córdoba have only won three games all season, with the first victory coming on December 6 against Athletic Bilbao.

In other words, the Serbian manager Miroslav Dukic doesn’t have many reasons to omit Bebé from his chosen line-up when the team-mates of former United winger Cristiano Ronaldo enter Estadio Nuevo Arcángel on Saturday, so it’s fate that Bebe will score a hat-trick and steal the limelight, right?
