Fletcher’s exit could help push through deal for Reid

by Richard Laverty

With multiple clubs interested in signing Darren Fletcher from Manchester United including West Ham, could the soon to be out of contract Winston Reid be involved in any deal to take Fletcher to Upton Park?

United have been linked with several centre-backs this month, including Reid, for all kinds of huge fees but the experienced Premier League defender could arrive for almost nothing given his contract runs out in June.

The fee could be decreased even more should United offer Darren Fletcher to the Hammers in exchange. Sam Allardyce’s side are the latest to be linked with a move for the midfielder who is also available on a free in June.

Allardyce has previously commented that he believes Reid will leave the club in the summer but hopes the defender will sign a new deal soon.

“We wouldn’t let Winston go unless it is a silly deal and I don’t think anyone would pay the money we want,” he said. “I still believe there is a 30 per cent chance he will stay. He tells us he still hasn’t made up his mind and we want him to stay.

Whilst United are targeting big money players that will instantly improve their first-team, they can’t ignore an experienced, solid defender available for almost nothing, especially if West Ham come asking for Fletcher.

It would certainly leave United’s squad in a stronger, more balanced shape if Reid replaced Fletcher on the roster.

Fletcher is set to leave Old Trafford but things might get complicated given La Liga side Valencia are also in for Fletcher and United would surely prefer him to go to Spain if they want any chance of having a second bid for Nicolas Otamendi accepted.

With Arsenal looking the more likely destination at the moment for Reid, United will have to decide quick who their main targets are in January or they’ll miss out altogether.
