David de Gea‘s agent Jorge Mendes has helped fuel speculation about his future at Manchester United by insisting anything can change in football.
The Spanish goalkeeper has already been at the centre of heavy media speculation he could be Real Madrid’s long-term replacement for Iker Casillas.
Although De Gea played down any possible move when asked about in November, his agent Mendes has left the possibility of a move firmly on the cards.
“I do not know the future, things change every five minutes,” Mendes said.
“We all know that in football nothing is impossible. In any case De Gea is at United now and that must be respected.”
Having dealt with some of the biggest transfers in world, Mendes is no stranger to heavy media speculation and would have been well aware of the ripple effect his comments on De Gea’s future would cause. After all, it is in Mendes’ interest to have as many clubs as possible after De Gea as it will secure him the best possible deal were anything to happen.
The ball is now firmly in Man United’s court and whether they are able to secure a contract extension. With De Gea’s form continuing to get better with every performance and Mendes happy for speculation to increase, it’s going to be a very long few months for Man United fans right up until the summer transfer window closes in September.
