Real Madrid reach agreement over Martin Odegaard transfer

by Sam Peoples

Real Madrid have officially announced an agreement has been reached over the signing of Martin Odegaard from Fotbal Stromsgodset.

The 16-year-old had been courted by almost every top level club across Europe including Manchester United, Barcelona and Bayern Munich but it seems the lure of joining the current European champions proved too much for Odegaard.

A statement on their official website read: “Real Madrid CF and Fotball Stromsgodset have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Martin Odegaard. After undergoing the relevant medical examination, the player will serve the media, accompanied by the Director of Institutional Relations, Emilio Butragueño, today 22 January at 13:30 in the press room of Real Madrid City.”

Odegaard visited Man United’s training ground and would have most likely met Louis van Gaal but it wasn’t enough to persuade him Man United was the right move for him.

Considered one of the best young talents of his generation, Odegaard was in a unique position of having every top European club chasing his signature but ultimately, he chose Madrid, which looks like a strange decision to some given their poor track record of developing talent.

However, the lure of playing under Zinedine Zidane for Real Madrid’s Castilla reserves side in Segunda B, a professional division, could have helped sway his decision. After all, if he’d have joined United, the U21s set-up in England would have done nothing to help his career progression given the lack of games in a season.

Either way, United have unfortunately missed out on one of the most prodigious talents in Odegaard.
