Ander Herrera‘s introduction against Cambridge United helped change the purpose of Manchester United’s stagnant attack.
Whereas United were stale prior to his substitution, his appearance from the bench lifted the team and only furthered the frustration of United fans who are asking why he is currently being left out by Louis van Gaal.
Up against Leicester City this weekend, Herrera surely has to start. There’s no two ways about it.
Van Gaal wants his side to play possession based football to have total dominance over the game, so there is no central midfielder better suited to that style than Herrera. Marouane Fellaini simply can’t offer what Herrera does as a full package.
The Spaniard is somebody who should be starting every week when fit. Instead of pushing Wayne Rooney deep into a role he is not entirely comfortable in, Van Gaal should place his faith in Herrera. After all, his recent performances have repaid Van Gaal’s faith when he was given the chance and he deserves to be back in United’s starting XI because of them.
