Robin van Persie has thrown his Old Trafford future into doubt after confirming he does not know if he will stay at Manchester United when his contract expires in 18 months time.
Van Persie joined the club in 2012 in a shock move from rivals Arsenal and fired United almost single-handedly to their 20th title in what turned out to be Sir Alex Ferguson‘s last season at the club.
Under David Moyes, Van Persie struggled and at times looked disinterested and has continued to struggle for form this season. The Dutchman did have a period of good scoring form before Christmas but it appears almost three years of constant football plus two major tournaments is catching up with the striker.
Speaking about whether he’ll remain at United past his current contract, the Dutchman admitted he doesn’t know what his Old Trafford future holds.
“It is not up to me,” Van Persie said.
“For the moment I am staying here for 18 months. That is it really. I can’t look into the future. I don’t know what is going to happen after that. We shall have to wait and see.”
Certainly at times it has appeared Van Persie has looked tired after playing so much football during the summer away with Louis van Gaal at the 2014 World Cup and a recent injury gave chances to the likes of Radamel Falcao and James Wilson.
Van Persie may count his blessings that Falcao is struggling for goals and Wayne Rooney is playing midfield but will be worried about the continuing emergence of 19-year-old Wilson.
