Manchester United’s stars have been captured hard at work ahead of this weekend’s match against Leicester City at Old Trafford.
With constant talk in the build-up to games surrounding how United will line-up under Louis van Gaal, supporters can point to the return fixture in September as a turning point in van Gaal’s tactical decisions this season.
United started the season in a 3-5-2 system before reverting to a diamond once all Van Gaal’s new signings were available after the first international break. United were 3-1 up at Leicester before a defensive collapse saw them lose 5-3.
Ever since, Van Gaal has favoured a ‘defence first’ process and despite poor football and plenty of draws, United haven’t conceded more than one goal in a game since the start of October.
Striker Radamel Falcao and midfielder Angel i Maria were two of the key players captured in the short training video and both will hope to have an impact against a side struggling at the bottom of the league.
Despite a defeat at home to Southampton, United’s home form has been very good this season and supporters will hope Van Gaal loosens the chains and puts faith in his team to outscore a side struggling against relegation.
Van Gaal’s reluctance to play attacking football, even against the smaller sides, has certainly frustrated supporters this season but the manager will feel vindicated given the extra defensive solidity but he has also accepted it is hampering United’s attacking stars.
Against QPR in their last league outing, United failed to create much until reverting to a diamond, scoring almost instantly after the switch. Fans may understand the argument for 3-5-2 in big games but they’ll hope to see a diamond this weekend.
