Man Utd vs. Leicester: Potential 4-4-2 diamond – Rooney in no.10 role

Wayne Rooney has been operating in a deeper role for Manchester United in his last few appearances.

The United captain hasn’t played particularly poorly but equally so he hasn’t been at his best.

Rooney’s best form this season came before Christmas when he found a goal-scoring run of form for both Man United and England but that was when he played in the striker’s role.

We’re of the mindset that Rooney should be playing further up the field than as a deeper lying central midfielder, so we’ve given him the free roaming no.10 role in this variation of the 4-4-2 diamond.

It will allow Rooney to stay as involved in the game as possible and give him the attacking freedom to attack as well. Marouane Fellaini would provide some balance in the side to bring a more defensive minded midfielder to play alongside Angel di Maria.

With United’s attack void of ideas right now, Van Gaal has to change something, and quickly.
