Van Gaal: We played like a team

Louis van Gaal was pleased to see his side win against Leicester as the manager reverted to the more popular diamond system but is still concentrating on the ‘process’.

Van Gaal’s philosophy and style of play has been a big talking point during his time at Old Trafford. Whilst supporters may wonder why their new boss would accept less than three points if it meant an improvement in performance, they will have been pleased to see Van Gaal revert to 4-4-2 against Leicester.

The change saw United march into a 3-0 half-time lead and van Gaal was glad to see his players playing as a team.

“The results are good but I’m looking always to the process and what our next step is now in that process,” he explained to MUTV.

“We played today with four defenders and four midfielders and the balance in the team is also important.

“I’ve seen today a team that was playing like a team and then you can play with a system like this. It is more difficult in a 4-4-2 with a diamond and you have kept the balance. [There were] only two moments were we lacking in concentration and it cost us one goal.”

Against QPR in the last Premier League match, the away supporters could be heard chanting ‘4-4-2’ as United again looked stale and devoid of creativity with three at the back.

But against the Leicester the team looked coherent and Van Gaal will want to see further improvement in the ‘process’ in the shape of FA Cup progression on Tuesday night.
